Pyramid Solitaire Strategy & Tips
A practical strategy guide for Pyramid Solitaire: clear Kings on sight, scan the whole exposed edge before drawing, favour moves that reveal a new row, and know a true dead end when you see one.
Play Pyramid SolitaireThe core idea
Read the whole board before you commit
Almost every strong Pyramid Solitaire habit comes down to one idea: the pairing you take first shapes which rows open up next. A pyramid that looks stuck at a glance often has a move hiding on the far side of the board.
- 01
Clear a King the instant it is playable
A King never needs a partner and never gets easier to reach later. Leaving one in place only delays uncovering whatever sits beneath it, so take it the moment it is exposed.
- 02
Scan the whole edge before you draw
Every playable card in the pyramid, plus the waste top, is a candidate. Look across all of them for a legal pair before turning the stock — the match you need is often on the far side of the board, not the first card you notice.
- 03
Favour reveals over easy cleanup
A pairing that uncovers a brand-new row is worth more than one that only tidies up cards already at the base. New rows mean new options; a tidy base with nothing above it freed up is a wasted move.
- 04
Track which ranks are running out
Once both remaining 9s are gone, every exposed 4 is dead weight until the stock produces a new one. Keep a rough sense of what has already cleared so you know which exposed cards are actually reachable partners.
- 05
Treat the waste top as a wildcard
The current waste card can pair with any playable pyramid card. Before turning the stock again, check whether the card already showing solves something — there is no rush to bury it under a new draw.
- 06
Use undo to compare two lines
When two different pairings are both available, the order you take them can matter — clearing one first may wall off the other. Try one, see what it opens, and undo to compare if you are not sure.
- 07
Know a true dead end when you see one
Once the stock is empty and nothing playable pairs or clears, the deal cannot recover — recycling the waste again just replays the same cards against the same pyramid. Deal a new game rather than cycling through it again.

How the approach shifts
The habits above apply throughout, but what you should be looking for changes as the pyramid opens up — see the Kings and redeals section of the guide for the two mechanics that matter most.
Early in the deal
Only the base row and any early stock draws are playable. Prioritise pairings that expose a new row over ones that just clean up the base — the base row will still be there later.
Mid-pyramid
This is where planning pays off most: several rows are open at once, and the order you clear them in determines whether the apex King becomes reachable or stays sealed off.
When you are stuck
If the stock is empty and no playable card pairs or clears, the deal is genuinely lost — deal a new one. Getting stuck is a normal outcome in Pyramid Solitaire, not a sign you misplayed.
